This series had multiple seasons, the lead was a white male, the show gradually escalated from just earth against these aliens to earth against many species, it was set in present time but humanity got advanced tech as soon as latter half season one. The show also wasn’t shy to show major characters dying. It was also animated. As for when the show released, that’s more complex, whilst I don’t know when it exactly released, the tv program which I watched it on was notorious to only premiere shows after they released or even ended. I watched the show in the early 2010’s, but it’s possible it started in the late 2000’s
