I’m not sure I can say I have a vague understanding of it. Why *wouldn’t* everything continue to work?

Was it all based on the calendar mechanics of going from 1900s to 2000s? Did people think the computers wouldn’t be able to function if they weren’t able to continue telling time/the date?

Was it just something someone made up as a conspiracy and it just snowballed?

Eta: Wow that was fast! Thank you everyone for responding and continuing to respond! For the longest time I thought it was a hoax made up to get people to spend money on new computers. What most are saying about the storage and the year being saved as two digits makes sense.
Seems like a lot of work went into fixing that, thank you all!
