Inspired by a forgotten Gascon tale 🧚‍♀️

This linocut (2025) depicts a swamp fairy from Gascony (South-West of France), known for enchanting shepherds and princes alike.

One of the things I like to explore is the old folk tales from my region. Nobody tells these stories anymore, not to kids, not at school, not at home. I found some of them in old books from the 1950s.

The original tale is called "The Battle with the Fairy." A young shepherd falls for her and tries to resist the spell. But in the end, it's his girlfriend who sorts things out, by "trussing her up like a sausage and chasing her off like a mangy dog." 😄

These tales mix moral lessons with fantastical creatures. In my own small way, I'm trying to keep them alive.

A feline version of the Norse mythology. Sköll chases the sun while Hati pursues the moon, giving birth to the cycle of day and night. Designed in a tarot card format, single block linocut from 2024.

Lilia Sola Regunt Lunam Unda Castra Leonem - "The lilies alone rule over the moon, the waves, the castle and the lion."

This is the motto of the city of Bordeaux.

In this linocut (2024), I wanted to reimagine the official coat of arms (see last picture) of my hometown. Its elements tell the story of the city: the leopard, inherited from the coat of arms of Aquitaine and England, proudly overlooks the Grosse Cloche (the Great Bell), which is what remains of the old city hall. Below them lies the crescent moon, evoking the curve of the Garonne river that shaped the history of the Port de la Lune (Moon Harbor).

Bonus: A tote bag handmade by a friend that I had the pleasure of printing on!
