Best friend said she hopes my Bf and I don’t last.
My best friend of 7 years, Jen (19), and I (Luke, 20) have slowly been growing apart over time, mostly because of different work schedules and life changes in general. Throughout our friendship, Jen has been in several relationships, and almost all of them ended badly. Whenever she got into a relationship, she would usually give me the cold shoulder and focus almost entirely on her boyfriend. I understand wanting to prioritize a relationship, but she would often cut everyone else off completely, which always bothered me. Even so, I was always there for her, especially during her breakups.
Recently, I got into my first serious relationship with my boyfriend, Matthew (20). Things have been going really well between us, and since we started dating, I’ve made a genuine effort to balance my relationship, work, and my friendship with Jen.
Matthew’s lease is almost up, and since I’m unhappy with my current living situation, we started talking about getting an apartment together. When I told Jen this, she completely flipped out. She started listing reasons why I shouldn’t do it, said she would feel abandoned, claimed she’d never come visit me even though it would only be about a 25–30 minute drive, and then started crying.
Since then, Matthew and I have continued apartment hunting and have put in a few applications that we’re hopeful about.
Last night, Jen and I were gaming together for a couple of hours, and everything was perfectly fine. Toward the end, I brought up moving again, and her entire mood changed instantly. She became aggressive and toxic. When I mentioned that Matthew and I had applications in, she responded in a really snarky tone, saying, “I hope you don’t get it, and if you do, I hope it doesn’t last because I’ll never see you.”
That comment honestly caught me off guard, so I just got off the game. We haven’t spoken since, and now I don’t know what to do.
