Hi,

Longtime lurker here. I got these two free bare root American persimmons from the National Wildlife Federation and i wasn’t sure I planted them right.

I have only planted a handful of bare roots in my time; I’m more used to 5-15 gallon trees. I’m accustomed to excavating down and removing hair size roots until I reach a pencil-finger sized root. I then plant that flush with the ground to avoid trunk rot and the infamous telephone pole + volcano.

I’m worried though that I should plant these bare roots deeper and ensure all of the hair sized roots / widened trunk is buried. I’ve tried to keep the hair sized roots moist (forgive the mulch volcano) while I find an answer.

Should I?

A-Stick with the pencil sized root as my root flare and ensure this is flush with the ground with a berm mulched a hands width around it.

B-Backfill my berm with pine bark/compost until the hair sized roots are covered

C-Digg up and replant with the last hair sized roots flush to the ground

D-Avoid watering the tree, mulch a volcano around the hair sized roots, and place a gator bag around the tree 😇
