Hey everyone,

I have an upcoming VR&E (Chapter 31) meeting and I’m trying to build a solid plan going into it.

My background:
- Federal firefighter (DoD)
- Experience with inspections, reporting, compliance, emergency response
- Looking to transition out of a physically demanding role into something more sustainable

My goal:
- Move into a Program Analyst / Policy Analyst type role (GS pathway)

The degrees I’m considering are:
- Master of Public Administration (MPA)
- Master of Public Policy (MPP)
- Master of International Affairs (MIA)
- Master of Public Health (MPH)

From what I understand, VR&E cares more about the career outcome than the specific degree, but I want to make sure I’m realistic.

Questions:
- Has anyone here actually been approved for one of these types of master’s programs through VR&E?
- What degree did you pursue and what was your career goal?
- What do counselors usually push back on?
- Did you need to prove that a master’s was required for your target job?

I’m trying to go in with a focused plan that clearly leads to employment, not just “I want a master’s.”

Appreciate any real experiences or advice.
