I don’t really need advice. Just really need to vent! I subbed today at a school where I was a teacher for 10 years. I’ve seen pretty much everything as a 20-year teaching veteran. But man, today was a 1st. I subbed in a 6th-8th teacher’s classroom. So, these four kids came strolling in late. I counted all of them tardy. Well, I wish they would have skipped! The ring leader was super loud, even after several redirections. He told me that he had legal trouble and would be going to juvie over the summer. He said he threw a desk at a teacher and some other stuff. I listened to him but didn’t respond. He started making himself fall out of his chair. Then, his buddies did the same thing. I warned them that I would call for an administrator if they didn’t stop. They continued talking loudly and egging each other on. Then, they started throwing paper, and other stuff, toward another table. I was walking to the desk and was planning on calling an administrator. They started throwing their chairs toward a group of girls. I called the front office, and they sent help immediately. In the meantime, once they realized I was calling the front office, they ran out of the room. The campus cop also came to the room. Another teacher saw the boys running and brought them back to the classroom. I told them that they weren’t allowed back in the room. Luckily, the administrators and the cop backed me. The ring leader said I was lying. But he wasn’t believed. It’s absolutely ridiculous that kids like this are allowed to stay in the school system. When I was a kid, this behavior would get a kid kicked out. I don’t take things personally. It’s usually never about the teacher or sub. I would be appalled if my kid behaved this way. I told myself I would not sub at this school again, even though I worked there for ten years. It’s just not worth it. They brought in a new principal who is trying to clean up all the behavior issues. In the meantime, the good kids and the teachers are suffering. We need to go back to the old days when misbehavior wasn’t tolerated, instead of letting bad kids get away with everything. They could have caused serious harm to another student or myself, but they didn’t seem to care.
