One of the many things that made Sugar Ray Robinson so special was his ability to generate KO power from a very short distance, a 6 inch space. Fighters with granite chins, like Fullmer (this was the only time he was KO'd and he is one of the few who had a winning record v Ray, even though they took place after Ray's peak 1943-53, he was still a great fighter through the 1950s) are not expecting to get caught with KO power from such short, concise shots. THAT, by the way, is what distinguishes Inoue and Tank. If you understand the sport you can see that they generate KO power without winding up or needing much space. The punches come from hands in a set stance, very short and quick. That is why even really good fighters get KO'd: even if they anticipate the shot, they aren't prepared for the power behind it because most short punches are not as devastating.
