When people say learn realism first do they mean ‘learn to reproduce the reference/real world objects accurately’ or ‘your drawing should have realistic proportions, planes and perspective’ ?

I have currently dedicated myself to drawing heads and focusing on realistic proportions has improved my understanding of the head to a great degree. But I still struggle to replicate the reference accurately. By accuracy, I mean all the little subtle details unique to the given face or subtle tilts of the face.

The heads are starting to look decent on their own but when I compare them to the reference, something is always off about the proportions and perspective of the head. I haven't dabbled into light and shadows yet.

So to what extent should I study realism before diving into the stylized art ?
