Asking for a borrower who I’m just…stumped on what to do next.

Has anyone had any luck with getting missing loan history from a prior loan servicer?

Long explanation below the jump
Thank you in advance 🙏🏼

=======================

Today, borrower has Direct consolidated loans (2, that’s normal) at Nelnet

Loan history from NSLDS file:

Chiropractic school degree obtained through FFEL loans (Stafford and Supplemental Loans) from 1988-1993.
Repayment status on these non-consolidated loans is in the file from 11/01/1993 - 01/22/1997
☝️ idk if these were federally held

01/22/1997 is the date that all above loans were recorded as having been consolidated to one FFEL Consolidated loan dated a few months before that, 11/07/1996.

This is where I had my first WTH moment, looking at the NSLDS file: there is NO loan status history recorded from 11/07/1996 - 06/23/2001. And then from 06/23/2001 - 06/11/2003, the FFEL Consolidated loan is recorded as being IN REPAYMENT status.

Then the borrower went back to grad school for an MD, starting medical school 06/2003 and finished 05/2007.

The Chiropractic degree consolidated loan issued 11/7/1996 stays in in-school deferment while in medical school until about halfway through and then it is consolidated (by itself) on 06/15/2005 and split into two FFEL Consolidated loans (I’m assuming 1 for all of the subsidized loans and 1 for all of the unsubsidized loans — on further review this might just have been an administrative change rather than a reverse consolidation, which is something I’m making up bc I have never seen it happen) and then stayed in in-school deferment until 06/23/2007.

Then there was 3 months of repayment status, taking these loans to 09/28/2007 where they were again consolidated, this time by grabbing some of the 2nd half of medical school loans.

Then the borrower consolidated all of the medical school loans right after graduating medical school in 05/2007.
Those FFEL consolidated loans have an issue date of 09/28/2007.

So as of 09/28/2007, the borrower had
1 FFEL Consolidated loan that represented Medical School
2 FFEL Consolidated loans that represented Chiropractic school
Total loans at the time, about $190k

Then I had my next WTH moment: no loan status history on two of the three FFEL consolidated loans from 09/28/2007 through 08/28/2011 👈 it’s hard to tell if these are the chiropractic school loans or not. From there It’s clean (ie repayment status) from 08/28/2011 - 03/13/2020 and then all 3 FFEL consolidated loans were consolidated to

1 of the 3 FFEL consolidated loans does have loan status history from 09/28/2007 - 08/28/2011 — a mixture of residency Deferment (14 months) and Forbearance (32 months)

2 Direct Consolidated loans on 02/18/2021 now serviced by Nelnet

There have been a number of prior loan servicers but for the missing time periods, the loan servicers were / are:

1996-2001 and 2007 - 2011: HIGHER ED LOAN AUTH OF MO (FORM NAVIENT) (888) 272-5543 👈 this Mohela.com not mohela.studentaid.gov

I’m thinking to say the borrower should call that number and request the missing loan status history so that that info can be submitted to Nelnet but I’m really hesitant to say that because it would be much easier if I could just write this out a little more clearly for them, to send via email / message
