Just picked up a new M Stein knife after seeing some recommendations here, so thought it might help others to compare the three I have:
Bottom - Beavercraft C8 (I think) detail knife
Middle - Flexcut KN13 detail knife
Top - M Stein N2
This isn't a review or advert - just my amateur observations.
All three have almost identical lengths of cutting edge but with different bevel grind widths. The flexcut blade is thinnest at about 1.2mm where the blade meets the handle. The other two are about 2mm.
Beavercraft - got it as part of a beginner spoon carving kit. Decent knife & did me fine until I found out there were other options. Ok sharpness out the box but don't think it holds its edge as well as the others.
Flexcut - v sharp out the box & keeps the edge better than the beavercraft. I modded the handle by sanding down as I didn't like the gloss varnish finish (felt sticky in the hand) & didn't like the logo! & I straightened the curve in the tip a bit to make it pointier for small details.
M Stein - sharpest of the three out the box. Not used much yet but feels good in my hand & think I'm going to like it. Prefer the handle shape to the other two & I like the finish which is not glossy or tacky. First cut in basswood leaves a glossy finish on the exposed wood so seems to cut very cleanly.
I mainly do small figures in basswood & definitely still a beginner. So certainly don't need three very similar knives but well, you know.. 😁
