I've moved to Ireland this year and trying to make new friends... Which becomes that bit harder as you get older (40) this year.

What are people doing for fun or to meet new people?

I'm an absolute beginner, but have previously played cricket in the UK (and lots of cricket players seem to play golf as a complimentary sport) so I'm hoping I'll have reasonable coordination etc.

What would you recommend for starting out?

Unfortunately it looks like I've missed the intro to golf for the year. I'm probably moving to the Leitrim/ Cavan area soon, if that makes any difference to suggestions.
