Hi everyone, I’m a full-time Occupational Therapist in NYC DOE (District 75) with about 2 years of experience. I’m feeling significant burnout and also dealing with a medical condition (CCCA) that is being treated by a dermatologist.

I’m trying to figure out my options for the next few months and would appreciate guidance from anyone familiar with DOE HR or similar situations.

I’m considering: • staying until winter break and then resigning in early 2027, OR • exploring a medical leave of absence due to burnout/stress + health issues

I also have a planned international trip around late December to mid-January, and I’m trying to understand what is realistically possible in terms of leave timing, approvals, and risks.

My main concerns are: • what leave options actually exist for DOE related service providers • how HR Connect/medical leave timing typically works • whether taking leave is better than resigning if I’m likely leaving anyway • any unintended consequences I should be aware of

I’m not looking for “how to game the system” — just honest insight on how people have navigated burnout and leaving DOE.

I’m especially interested in hearing from NYC DOE staff or related service providers (OT/PT/SLP) who have taken medical leave or resigned

Thank you in advance.
