Hello, in all the years we have visited Venice, we have never tipped at restaurants and never ate at “touristy” restaurants.

Tonight we were drawn to the beautiful live music from one of the restaurants at San Marco. All we had were drinks.

When it was time to pay, it was $87 plus the cover charge for a total of 120 euro.

The server asked multiple times what I would like the total to be charged to my card. I said 120. He asked what it would be with the tip. I said no tip. He was visibly pissed.

Now I feel terrible because the service and server were wonderful and the music was so lovely. I paid for the atmosphere.

My husband says I did the right thing (he was playing with the kids in the square) and I say that the look on the older gentleman server’s face said I made a big mistake.

Was this restaurant the exception to the “no tip” rule? Or is it possible he thought I would do the “American” thing and tip without knowing better?

Hello! I purchased train tickets online and have received them in my email along with a QR code on it.

Previously in my travels here, I used paper tickets. Does my online ticket which shows my coach number and seat, still need to be validated or do I just board the train and show the QR code to be scanned when they check?

Hello, we are noticing that a lot of taxi drivers ask us to pay in cash - we always pay with credit card.

Is there a reason why for them asking for cash payment instead of credit card? We want to make sure we are no committing a faux pas!
