Update on SkyBoard | The Skylander Fan app

Hey everyone! About a month ago, I shared some thoughts about SkyBoard, a fan-made project I’ve been working on that I want to be the Skylanders companion app.

I wanted to post a progress update and get your thoughts on a core feature I’m currently building which is the characters page. Check the last slide for a quick preview as well.

Right now, the app has a nice way to browse lore, abilities etc.., but I want it to feel special when you actually add a figure to your collection. What I have in mind:

  • Editable Stats: The stats (Health, Speed, etc.) become editable fields so you can input your specific character actual stats.
  • Progress Tracking: New fields will appear for Gold and XP so you can track your leveling progress.
  • Collection Data: You’ll be able to select which Variants you own and the Price you got them.

Well.. apart from your thoughts on what I currently have built which is still under construction, do you think I should tackle the owned skylanders differently? I can't currently think of another main stat. I do not want for now to mess with hats or challenges etc..

The other thing I am really troubled for now is keeping the app online or offline. Since this is 100% fan-made and cannot be monetized, I am leaning toward an offline approach for now. This means your data stays on your device and no wifi required to work, the app is lightning-fast, and it will never shut down because of a server. However, going online would allow for 'cool' things like global ownership stats ("30% of users own this" or leaderboards idk).

I’d love your feedback:

  1. Do you care about tracking Gold/XP in an app, or is just checking the box "I own this"?
  2. Would you prefer a simple offline tool, or is the "community/online" aspect worth the potential complexity?
  3. Let the imagination flow, this is a community app so I want to hear you guys :). I am also really new to the whole building while posting updates so we are all learning along the way.

I am also on the lookout for a place to find skylander prices, for my fellow devs, if you guys know of an API or already prepared data sheet I could use, please let me know so I do not have to make that from scratch! Soon I want to post an update as well on SkyRipper which is also going very well. (SkyRipper on Github)

Looking forward to hearing what you think!
