I live in a listed house (18th century) in Hertfordshire, UK and have found a multitude of things in the garden in the past while gardening.

But today I found this while gardening and as growing up with a granddad who did metal detecting as more than just a hobby and having donated a great amount of (mainly Roman) artifacts to a city museum nearby and kept some collectibles for himself and the family, I know when something is old enough that it’s not just ‘someone just dropped it in the garden’.

I wondered and would appreciate if anyone could help me identify what I’ve found please?

Edit- I may have to try and take more pictures to show size as it really is small and thin and I don’t think my pictures convey it.

I also want to say it was in the front garden by the main road which as we live in the “old village” it was the only road to and from market in the old days and the stone on our cottages says 1792. So these houses and area are extremely old
