The single most common reason a site isn't being cited isn't schema or llms.txt. It's that their CDN or security plugin is silently returning 403 to GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot at the edge while their robots.txt cheerfully says "allow."

AI crawler tries to fetch the page, gets a forbidden, moves on. The site never gets a chance to compete.

Second most common: schema only on the homepage. Blog posts are a vacuum. AI engines look at the whole site, not the landing page.

Third: no named author signals. Anonymous bylines get discounted because AI prefers sources it can verify.
