My boyfriend’s hair is thinning and I can’t tell him

My darling boyfriend has fairly long hair that he always keeps in a tight braid down his back or in a very tight bun. I do his hair regularly and from the first time I ever did it I noticed that the hair in front is way thinner than the rest. Luckily he has very thick hair everywhere else which makes up for it and he has enough in the front that I can kind of give him a comb over. The hair on the back of his neck is thin and short too.

All the hair in the front is all one length and that length stops right where he ties the hair tie for these buns and braids. The same goes for the hair in the back. It seems like he pulls the hair so tight that it rips it out at the edges and when a strand gets long enough to be tied back again, the process repeats. He also does the thing where once the tie is in, he pushes it up further which is commonly known to cause breakage. Plus he wears bandannas a lot which seems to be preventing the hair in back from growing,

I’ve tried lightly telling him that making braids and buns so tight isn’t good for his hair and I’ve pointed out how short the hair in front is, but I don’t have the heart to tell him that it looks like his hair is thinning and unless he styles it just right it looks…not good. He says he can’t stand the hair tie if it’s loose. Tangentially related, I REALLY want him to cut his hair. It’s down to his knees and he only ever wears it in those styles. It’s a pain for him when he wears it down. I remember when it was mid-stomach length and he looked to handsome! Especially with it down. And that was before he wore the ties so tight and he could have it down often, so it looked very full and healthy. But he loves his long hair and I don’t want to tell him what to do with his body or tell him that he looks better one way than he does another. He worked hard to grow it so long. But sometimes I just want to blurt it all out, ya know?
