This is probably a dumb question and I'm pretty sure I know the answer already.

Hypothetically, my boss gave me a deadline for a task and I was unable to get the task done by said time. Is it illegal for my boss to tell me to get the task completed "off the clock"?

Also would it change anything, legalilty wise, who's fault it was? Like say the task didn't get completed by the deadline simply because I have poor time management skills.

This isn't something that's happened yet, but my general manager sent a list of tasks for all the lower managers (swing managers) to get done and said if we didn't get them done by the deadline, we'll do them off the clock.

(this is a fast food job, if that affects anything)
