Dragon Ball is one of the all time iconic manga and anime series out there, but the old English dub of Dragon Ball Z from the late 90s and early 2000s was… frequently iffy, to be generous. Over the years, the cast’s performances and the show’s scripts improved dramatically, with most of the worst of the Dragon Ball Z dub being replaced by the dub of the official recut Dragon Ball Z Kai.
However, one story that wasn’t covered in Kai was Bardock: The Father of Goku, meaning that the old heavily rewritten dub from the year 2000 is still the go to English version of that special.
In 2023, the video game Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot released a DLC chapter based on the Bardock special titled Bardock: Alone Against Fate. This DLC expansion had much more accurately translated dialogue than the dub of the actual special 23 years earlier.
This edit replaces a lot of the original dub’s dialogue with the more accurate dialogue from the video game. Other sources include the Dragon Ball Z Kai dub (specifically a flashback to Bardock’s final showdown with Freeza from Kai episode 42 and some dialogue from Goku and Vegeta’s first fight on Earth for Bardock’s visions of the future) and some clean music tracks from AnimeMaakuo’s BGM collection (to replace music that still had echoes of dialogue on the separated branches of the 5.1 track), a few of Freeza’s lines in scenes not covered in the DLC are replaced with lines from Dragon Ball FighterZ that fit the context to avoid switching from Daman Mill’s portrayal back to Linda Young’s.
I did a previous version of this in 2022, which wasn’t able to go nearly as far as this one does due to being made before the Kakarot DLC was released. My first version had a few janky issues that bugged me a little, but this new version is a lot more polished and overall better in every way.
For additional details, including how to get a copy of this edit, I have a thread over on the Kanzenshuu forums.
Please note that this edit is audio only and needs to be synced with a copy of the original footage. I personally recommend the Seed of Might version, which is both the highest quality version of the special as well as the one I synced the audio to.
