How do I safely keep a corn snake + future cat in the same bedroom? Need setup advice.
I have a 5‑month‑old corn snake who’s super chill but very easily startled. I keep him on my desk so he can get used to me, but he still spooks if I move too fast or something drops. I’m planning on getting a cat in a few months, and I’m trying to figure out how to make the setup safe and low‑stress for both animals.
I’m a college student living in a townhouse with a roommate who isn’t into snakes, so my corn snake has to stay in my room. I also don’t want to keep the cat out of my room because I want us to bond, so they’ll be sharing the space whether I like it or not.
Right now the snake is in a front‑opening enclosure with a mesh lid and heat/light fixtures on top. I’m nervous about the idea of a cat jumping on the lid or knocking something over, especially when I’m away at classes for hours at a time.
One idea I had was putting the enclosure in my closet and using a clear barrier so the snake isn’t “shut away,” but the cat can’t get in. I’m not sure if that would be too dark or stressful for the snake, though.
If anyone has experience keeping a snake and a cat in the same room, especially in a small apartment or dorm‑style setup, I’d love to hear how you arranged things, what worked, and what to avoid. Any advice on safe enclosure placement, cat‑proofing, or reducing stress for both animals would be super appreciated!!
