When do I apply for aid?

I am applying to transfer this fall for ucs and spring 2027 for privates. I’ve heard people saying that you gotta apply for aid the summer before you apply for the schools. Does anyone know how it works? It’s my first time doing this so I’m completely lost

Applying this fall

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a ccc student planning to transfer next cycle, and I’d really appreciate honest feedback from other transfer students.

I currently have a 4.0 GPA, participate in my schools honors program, part of honors society and student government (advocacy board), and I’ve been working on a research project on ai in immigration governance that I recently presented at an honors showcase (also got invited to present at PCB-AHA in a UNLV campus). Outside of school, I run a free ESL tutoring program and intern at a small law firm.

I’m hoping to apply to schools like UC Berkeley and Columbia (Berkeley is my number 1) But sometimes it’s hard to tell what actually makes a transfer applicant stand out.

For those who transferred to selective schools:
What helped your application the most?
Any programs/awards you’d recommend perusing before applying?

*I immigrated 3 years ago and have worked 472837 different jobs to help at home. I plan on writing one of my essays about the struggle of having to take care of my family while balancing school work.

Me and my boyfriend have been together for a little over 3 years, recently he proposed to me and I said yes. The thing is that we’re only 20 and 21, and I am an international student. We will file the petition for a green card right after the we get married at the city hall. It will be a small ceremony with our parents, two friends and his sister - we want to host a big wedding at my home country because of my extended family, but that will be in a year or two. I’m worried about how hard it will be to prove that our marriage is real because we don’t have anything under our names, we go to different schools which doesn’t allow us to live together now, although we spend 5 days a week together. We have plenty of pictures of trips and a small shared bank account, but I think that’s pretty much it. I’m aware that waiting another year (so he graduates and we move in together) could be better, but both of our families have good money and can pay for our expenses while we get education, so nothing will change drastically in a year.
Any thoughts or advice?
