I recently got interested in post-processing after looking at screenshots from FFXIV 1.0. Even though the graphics are technically outdated, I couldn't help wondering — why do they look so good?

So I tried to recreate that kind of look.

Here's my approach:

  • Reduced pure blacks and whites to soften the overall contrast
  • Added a deliberately exaggerated red-tinted bloom for a warmer, softer glow
  • Applied a slight blur to soften edges

I used my Miqo'te and a trailer-style Warrior of Light as subjects for some test shots.

I really like this level of glow — it feels atmospheric in a way I wasn't expecting. I've never actually played 1.0, so I'm curious what it really felt like back then.

[Update] Thank you all for your replies! I wanted to reply too, but my comment seems to have been hidden. Since this is my first time posting on this subreddit, it might have been flagged by the spam filter.
