From Nigerian Farmer to UK Agri-Entrepreneur: Where Do I Even Start? 🌱
Hi everyone,
I hope this finds the right community. I'm a Nigerian immigrant living in the UK, and farming is genuinely in my blood. Back home in Nigeria, I ran my own farm business for several years before I had to leave due to the worsening insecurity situation, a decision that was as heartbreaking as it was necessary.
Since arriving in the UK, I've been building myself back up. I recently completed an MSc in Management with International Business, so I understand business strategy, planning, and operations, but UK agriculture is a completely different landscape to what I know, and I don't want to make costly mistakes.
I'm now seriously exploring starting a farm business here in the UK and would love guidance on:
- Where to begin– Are there grants, schemes, or programmes specifically for new or beginning farmers in the UK?
- Land access– How do people typically find and secure farmland without already owning it? Are there tenancy routes or starter farm schemes?
- Legal & regulatory requirements– What licences, registrations, or compliance steps does a new farm business need?
- Crop/livestock viability – What types of farming are realistic for someone starting small with limited capital?
- Support networks– Are there organisations, forums, or communities (especially those welcoming to immigrant entrepreneurs) that could help?
I bring real farming experience, a strong business background, and genuine passion, I just need a roadmap for the UK context.
Any advice, signposting, or personal experiences would mean the world.
Thank you in advance. 🙏
