Hi, just looking for some honest advice because I don’t want to waste years going down the wrong route.

I’m a social worker in the UK with about 5 years’ experience in children in care, foster/adoption work and complex needs. The plan is to move to Texas with my husband and kids. He’ll be going on an E-2 visa through a business so we can live there, but I know that doesn’t lead to a green card which is why I’m looking at NIW.

A big factor for me is my eldest son is disabled (autism/ADHD, quite high needs) so we really need something stable long term. He wouldn’t realistically be able to switch onto something like a student visa later on, so I feel like I need to think ahead now.

My idea was to do an MSW in the US, get licensed (LMSW then LCSW), build up experience maybe around trauma/autism/families and then use that towards NIW. I’ve also looked at doing public health alongside it but not sure if that’s actually needed or just adds time and cost.

Does this sound like a realistic path for NIW or am I overthinking it? Would I be better off just focusing on working and building experience first and worrying about immigration later?

Any advice appreciated
