My husband has a work obligation in Fairbanks and we're going to add on about 6 days to do a road trip near by. Having done some of the AK "basics" before (Anchorage, Seward, Kenai, McCarthy/Wrangell-St. Elias and backpacking in Denali) we won't be repeating those and while I really wanted to look into Gates of the Arctic we decided to do something less expensive and less complicated this time.
So we have a 4x4 rental and are going to drive out to Dawson City, YT (visiting Tombstone Territorial Park) through Delta Junction, then back and along the Denali Highway (confirmed allowed by the rental company; I've bookmarked https://www.alaska.org/guide/denali-highway for tips on that part). We have a variety of accommodations booked and are also planning to take our tent and sleeping bags for one or two of the nights (particularly along the Denali Highway).
We looked into a campervan or similar, but seems like we waited a little too long and between gas prices probably heading further skyward and logistical questions (like showering) we decided not to pursue.
Anyway, with those parameters, curious for any feedback, suggestions on what to prioritize along the way or to be careful of. It seems like a not very commonly done drive (maybe for fair reasons, we understand this isn't likely to blow us away the same as our Denali/Wrangell/Kenai trip did) but we're interested to get a taste of the middle of the state and dip into some of the history.
