Wild caught fish discussion.
I feel this is a good place to start with this conversation. I'd like to hear everyone's opinion on wild caught fish. I am going to try and extensively voice mine.
First. I don't believe wild caught fish are inherently problematic. This can absolutely be done sustainably. Many fish may dry up and die seasonally that are also caught for the trade and live much longer healthy lives.
We ultimately need tighter regulation and laws for capture, transport and feeding but also actually supporting the locals who catch these fish. For many this may be one of the only sources of income for many family on the Amazon for instance.
I believe if we all moved to only captive fish it will actually become harder to convince people to care about the environments they come from. Who cares about nature if I can raise it all in a box in building as more "ethical"
Captive breeding is often done horribly unethically. You have mass inbreeding weakening lines as time goes on, deformities, weak immune systems and so on.
I think there can also be expectations for various species who do much worse with the housing and transport though. I think we need to use captive breeding to fill in demand and help not over fish. I would not support an entire wild ban personally. How fo you all feel? I imagine this particular reddit will be more heavily in favor of only captive bred. Thanks for reading and the discussion!
