You’re a new company officer on a 3-0 engine, and just completed your FTO. You’ve just lateraled to this new department from a city department. It is a red flag warning day and it’s 102 degrees with winds at 15 mph with gusts up to 30.

You receive a dispatch for a vehicle fire. While en route, LE reports that the fire is spreading into the vegetation and getting close to a house. The photos provided are of the scene, as well as what you were seeing on Maps while en route. Your second engine is approximately 10 minutes away.

You have a Type 1 Engine with a 500 gallon tank, and have a full compliment of hose packs with wildland hose and a reel / booster line. Your two firefighters both have 5+ years on the job.

What is your Report on Conditions (ROC) to dispatch over the radio, and what are your priorities and tactics? What is the assignment for the second engine?

You’re covering SLU during the fire season at station 70. You’re dispatched to a report of a single vehicle traffic collision without injury, single engine response. You arrive and find this. You’re on a Schedule B Type 3 Engine with 2 brand new first year firefighters.

What would your Report on Conditions (ROC) be and what would your strategies and tactics be?

I’ve been in my unit for about year and they said they would be able to make me a Firefighter 1 for 9 months and my regular job doing fuels during the other 3 months… they recently told me that it’s not possible anymore and might go away completely with the new firefighter 2 model.

Anyone have any insight on this? I’d like to remain as a Tech since I’m working towards my Forester License and I have a solid group of people I work with, but I’d love to be able to fight a bit of fire as well on a crew or engine.

If the captain goes out 3 - 5 times in a year and times out each time… how can a BC who’s not a STEN / Overhead Qual’d make that much? Seems like if you just want to make more money you just stay as a Schedule B captain right? I’m only 1 season in with the department as a Forestry Technician, not a firefighter, so if I’m completely missing something that’s obvious I apologize.
