First day attire-is it really ok to not wear a suit?

As the title suggests, I have been told dress is business casual, but I feel very weird not wearing a suit and tie for my first day. I’ve worn a suit to the first day of even my dumbest jobs, so it just feels under dressed to show up in only dress pants/shirt. From your experience, do most summer associates do business casual on the first day (for firms where business casual is the norm)?

In your opinion as a full time associate, Which looks worse? Being the only summer associate not wearing a suit, or being the only summer associate who is wearing a suit? This is NYC Big Law V30 for context. Thanks to anyone who shares their opinions!
