Listening the Esther and Griffin and David's (excellent) explanation and defense of rom coms reminded me of something. At one point Esther said that there was a time when the American film industry understood that rom coms are movies that men AND women both enjoy, and I thought about last summer when my 10 year old daughter asked if we could start watching Rom Coms as a family, starting with "27 Dresses." My heart skipped a beat when my husband, from the other room, said "Absolutely not, we have to start with *good* rom coms if you want to know why they are so awesome" and it was like I fell in love all over again. I'm wondering if anyone else went through that regrettable time in the 2000s when hetero men seemed pre-programmed to "hate Rom Coms" and felt especially jazzed when you found the guy who happily watched "Moonstruck" with you over and over?
