Hi everyone,
I just wanted to share our experience in case it helps someone going through the same nightmare.
Our 3-year-old male Bengal cat escaped through a door gap late on a Friday night. He is strictly an indoor cat with limited supervised outdoor time in a catio, very timid, and not used to being outside on his own at all.
We live in a rural area (fields, a few houses nearby, some roads not too far). He has escaped briefly before but always returned within a few hours. This time he was gone much longer — almost 5 days. The first nights were absolutely terrifying. We searched for hours at night and during the day, checked everywhere around our property (sheds, under terraces, bushes, even roof spaces), and expanded the search further and further out when he didn’t appear.
We also:
-posted in local Facebook groups
-put out food, water, and items with his scent
-placed his litter box outside near a safe shelter area
-created a “safe path” from a sheltered spot back into the house
-eventually even had a search dog come out, which indicated a possible area nearby
But still… no sign of him. No sightings. No reports. Nothing.
What kept us going was that there were no signs of injury or body found in local posts, which gave us some hope.
After almost 5 days, he suddenly came home during the night.
He was extremely hungry and ate frantically, but otherwise seemed surprisingly okay. Since then he has been sleeping a lot, seeking comfort, purring constantly, and staying very close to us — even sleeping on our feet and checking that we are nearby with his paw. We also noticed he had lost some weight, but otherwise no visible injuries. He is now resting a lot and slowly recovering. It feels like he was just hiding somewhere extremely close the whole time, too scared to come out until he finally felt safe enough and hunger brought him back.
We are incredibly relieved and still processing the stress of the whole situation. I just wanted to share this because during those days it felt completely hopeless, but sometimes they really are closer than we think.
If your indoor cat goes missing — don’t give up early, especially if they are shy. Keep searching nearby hiding places, even repeatedly.
I’m so grateful he is home.
