What most people get wrong when hiring repair technicians

Most bad experiences with electricians, plumbers, or AC repair are not about the work itself they are about how people choose them.

A few common mistakes:

  • Hiring the first available person in an emergency
  • Trusting generic 5-star reviews without details
  • Not asking what’s included in the price upfront
  • Skipping comparison when stressed (which leads to overpaying)

A better approach is simple:

Always ask a few basic questions before confirming anyone, even in urgency.

Example:

  • What’s included in the price?
  • Have you done this exact work before?
  • What if the issue comes back?

Most problems come from lack of clarity, not lack of skill.

I Built FIX-IT, a marketplace to connect homeowners and licensed tradespeople to make home repairs more efficient and build a community of trust

Hey everyone 👋

I have been working on a project called FIX-IT, and I wanted to finally share it publicly and get some honest feedback from the community.

FIX-IT is a home services booking platform focused on making it easier to find and schedule trusted professionals for things like:

  • Plumbing services
  • Electrical repair
  • Home cleaning
  • Appliance repair
  • General handyman & maintenance work

The idea came from repeatedly dealing with the same problems most people face when booking home services:

  • unreliable scheduling
  • slow responses
  • unclear pricing
  • difficulty finding trusted professionals
  • too many calls/messages just to book one job

So I started building a simpler experience where users can book home repair and maintenance services online without all the usual friction.

Current focus areas:

  • simple booking flow
  • verified service professionals
  • faster scheduling
  • real-time service updates
  • better experience for both customers and service providers

The platform is live now, and there’s also an iOS app available called FIX-IT Service Booking.

You can sign up on the website currently to create your profile and the app is launching this month on App Store

I am still actively improving everything, so I would genuinely love feedback from people who have used:

  • handyman apps
  • home service marketplaces
  • cleaning service apps
  • plumbing/electrical booking platforms

A few questions:

  • What’s your biggest frustration with home service apps?
  • What would make you trust a platform like this?
  • Do you prefer instant booking or quote-based systems?
  • What features are usually missing from these platforms?

Would appreciate any feedback, criticism, or suggestions. Thanks for reading 🙌

Do platforms like Angi and Thumbtack actually help, or are referrals still better?

I am a contractor and I wanted to ask both contractors and people who hire services something I have been thinking about lately. When you need work done or when you are looking for jobs, what platform or method are you actually using right now to find the right person or the right work?

For example, do you use platforms like Angi, Thumbtack, Facebook groups, Google search, or just rely on referrals and word of mouth?

From your experience, do these platforms really help in finding reliable people and good quality work, or do you still face problems like trust, pricing issues, or low quality leads?

I am just trying to understand what is actually working for people in real life right now and what is not.

What is the most frustrating part of finding reliable local services?

Hey everyone,

I have been thinking about this lately and wanted to hear real experiences from people here.

When you need something fixed (home repair, electrician, plumbing, etc.), what is the most frustrating part of the process?

For me, it is usually:

  • Not knowing who to trust
  • Spending too much time comparing options
  • Getting inconsistent pricing or no response

I am curious how others deal with this, do you rely on word of mouth, platforms, or just trial and error?

Also, what do you think current platforms (like Angi, Thumbtack, etc.) get wrong?
