Croatia Digital Nomad Visa in Split: Real-world questions about the 3-day MUP rule, temporary addresses, and SafetyWing.
Hi everyone,
I’m currently organizing my move to Croatia on the Digital Nomad Visa and would love some ground-truth advice from people who have recently gone through the process in Split.
My Current Setup (The Context):
- Citizenship: Brazilian (Schengen visa-exempt for 90 days).
- Work: Senior Cloud Engineer working remotely via B2B contract (income requirements fully met).
- Application: Submitting the online application right now from my home country.
- Arrival: Landing in Split in mid-August.
- Initial Accommodation: I booked a registered hostel for my first 3 weeks (August 10 - 31) to use as my temporary address for the online application while I hunt for a long-term 1-year lease in person.
I have three specific technical questions about how the Split police station (MUP) handles the arrival process:
1. The 3-Day Registration Rule vs. eVisitor
I know foreigners must register at the police within 3 days of arrival. However, hostels automatically register guests in the eVisitor system within 24 hours, right?. Since my goal is to activate my Digital Nomad Visa process, do I still need to physically go to the MUP in those first 3 days to report my temporary address (bringing Form 16a), or does the hostel's eVisitor registration cover me legally until I find my permanent apartment?
2. The Transition to a Long-Term Lease
Once I arrive and start looking for an apartment, is there a hard legal deadline to find a place, sign the 1-year lease, and go to the MUP to do the biometrics and order the residence card? Am I strictly bound by my hostel checkout date (Aug 31) to have the permanent address sorted, or is there a grace period?
3. Health Insurance Acceptance
I am planning to buy the SafetyWing Nomad Insurance Essential (and I will add the "Adventure Sports" add-on since I plan to snowboard in the winter). Has anyone recently submitted this specific SafetyWing policy to the Split MUP? Did they accept it without issues for the full 1-year/18-month visa approval?
Any insights, recent experiences at the Split MUP, or tips on navigating this transition from a temporary hostel to a permanent lease would be hugely appreciated.
