EDF revised bill

Hi there, hoping someone will be able to help out with a ‘little problem’ relating to revised charges.

In November 2024 I moved out of a property where EDF was the electricity and gas provider. It was an old building, and the gas meters were located in the basement, for which there was only 1 key shared between occupants of the building.

On top of that, there was a legal dispute over basement access going on between the person who rented the basement and the management company that looked after the building, and a notice was placed on the door that said anyone who enters the basement is considered to be trespassing and would be fined/taken to court.

Because of this, we were not able to provide meter readings when we left the property, which I explained to EDF when I asked for the account to be closed, and to which they said that was fine and I would pay an estimate instead.

Fast forward to October 2025, I received a ‘revised bill’ for roughly £100 for the 2 month period of October-December 2024 (as mentioned previously, I moved out around mid-November).

I called EDF to understand why I was receiving the bill, to which they stated that we never provided meter readings, and now that the current tenant has provided them, they revised the charge. I payed the bill and they assured me it would be my last bill.

Today, 3 May 2026, I get another ‘revised bill’ for 12x the charge for the same period!!! They are trying to charge me over £1,200 for gas charges relating to the same time frame, for a property I moved out of a year and half ago.

I cannot afford to pay this, nor do I believe it is right to continuously amend a bill when the account has been closed! I understand I didn’t provide a meter reading when I moved out, however it’s not like it was because I was too lazy to - plus, the EDF agent told me it was fine.

Has this happened to anyone else, or does anyone have any advice? I’m going to call them tomorrow (or Tuesday as bank holiday tomorrow), but based on the conversation I had last time they are pretty strict with this.
