How to not play Viking?

I fell in love with this game instantly, however I had no idea how to play and I think I still don't.
I grasp the mechanics well enough but I watched and leaned how to play as a viking and martial/prowess was enough.
I tried a game now as a roman in Italy and I can't grow. I when hard on intrigue but I find myself often lost with option, like why murder someone? how ca I put myself in line for thrones?
Started in Benevento and manage to expand downwards (invading after getting a claim), I had 9 counties (5 with me and 4 with a vassal).
I managed to marry Italy king's daughter and then I murdered him, my wife was the new queen and wasn't the king of italy, so I killed her too but my daughter was the new queen and I only a regent. I was trying not to develop a big army and conquer by diplomacy and intrigue, but I don't know how, honestly. Any help is appreciated, I'll try it again this evening.
