I keep reading if not a problem don't fix it. I have a three month old son. At the hospital he wasn't diagnosed with lip/tongue tie (although I'm not sure if this is something they diagnose right after birth at the hospital). At his first pediatrician appointment and at the first month well check, pediatrician checked his mouth but didn't say anything. But between those two appointments I have seen their in house lactation consultant and she said he doesn't have one. He had great latch while at the hospital he was born but over the next two weeks, it took a long time for him to latch and even if he did it was very shallow. Despite his struggles, he gained weight incredibly.

After his first month appointment, it got worse and nursing him was becoming difficult for me too. The neck pain, shoulder pain, arm and wrist pain were getting worse from trying to hold him to latch and relatch constantly. So I went and saw a private IBCLC and she said he has a lip tongue tie, she gave me some stretches to do but did not say he needs the release done at this time.

Now at his two month appointment, I mentioned these to the pediatrician and she gave me a referral to an ENT for consultation. While making the ENT appointment, I found out that they did the consultation and release at the same time. I wasn't ready to go for the release and only wanted a consultation. The IBCLC told me that the office I was referred to will release it even if the case was mild without a thorough explanation to me. So I haven't gone yet.

But at his two month well check he was also diagnosed with a mild torticollis. So we got a physical therapy evaluation done and will start PT next week.

We are still struggling to latch deeply although his sucking has become stronger and so now it's becoming painful to nurse. He is gaining on his curve though. If he is gaining well then should we just continue? Maybe the PT will help? I'm hesitant to go to the ENT because I don't want to be pushed to getting him released without all the information I need.

His frenulum looks exactly like his sister's when she was a baby. We saw the pediatrician office's LC and got her latching improved and they all never said she had a lip tie. I didn't really have any difficulty with her other than my areola was raw from the beginning until I weaned her at around 16 month old. I don't know if that is related though.

I apologize for the long post. I'm just unsure what to do.
