Hey everyone,

I’ve been involved in aviation for several years now on the airport operations side, and I’m finally at the point where I want to pursue my private pilot certificate.

One of the big things I’m trying to navigate is the medical process. I’m a Type 1 diabetic, so I know getting a 3rd class is going to involve some additional steps and a special issuance.

I’m planning to find an AME, but I’ve heard it can be really helpful to meet with one beforehand to go over your situation before officially applying. I want to avoid making any mistakes on the initial application that could slow things down.

For anyone here who has gone through this:

What did the process look like for you with Type 1 diabetes?

How long did it take to get approved?

Did you meet with an AME beforehand, and was it helpful?

Any tips on documentation, CGM data, A1C levels, etc.?

Anything you wish you knew before starting?

Appreciate any insight, just trying to go into this as prepared as possible.

Thanks!
