What's Legal for Printing in a book?
Thank you for your help in advance.
I am creating a coffee table book about a fashion business I used to have. And I want to understand the legalities of using images for a book in the United States.
In it will be photos of runway shows, events + candids taken in the store.
Here's my questions -
Queestion 1
I have the photographers' permission to use their images from the events they shot and will credit them.
Q - Do I need the approval of the subjects in the photos? A few people are low-key famous but most are regular folks. They were either models, performers or posed for photos like at a step + repeat at a party. I didn't have anyone sign a release back then but it was a public location like a store or a performance.
Question 2
The candids were taken in my store by my staff with a store camera (it was in the mid-2000's) again, the same question can I print these images without approval from the subjects? Most are folks posing for the picture, some are truly candid but they're all in good taste.
Q - if the candids were taken at work with my shop camera who gets credited as the photographer?
Question 3
There's some media coverage of the store that includes publications that are out of business.
Q - Can I reprint/shoot a copy of the newspaper and include it in the book?
Question 4
I have one photographer who sent me a disc of images for an event back in 2010 but I cannot get her to respond to my inquiry around using these images in the book.
Q - We don't have a contract but she did send me the photos back then, can I include them with appropriate credit? Or is that not ok.
