[TOMT] [BOOK] Fantasy book about woman in modern world who goes to inherited cabin in the woods and falls through portal to magical realm.
It’s very possible that I’m mixing up two books. I read/listen to a lot of fantasy and it all bleeds together sometimes but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the ending of this one.
It starts with a woman in our modern world who either just lost her job or a relationship just ended or something along those lines, so she goes to a cabin in the woods she inherited from her parents. She ends up falling through an unknown portal into another realm. A man or maybe fae picks her up and she says, “he’s not ugly” out loud. This just stuck out to me because it was funny. He takes her with him back to his camp where he is with two friends. On the journey they run into a diplomat who has (I think) lavender hair. He wants to take FMC with him but it doesn’t end up happening and he goes on his way. None of the original three trust her but eventually travel back to their kingdom. The MMC who picked her up is very loyal to the queen. I can’t remember if the MMC is related to her or just works closely with her.

At one point FMC visits the dungeons and sees a woman who is in bad shape. The woman says something that makes FMC curious. Main character goes back to visit her to get information when she isn’t supposed to. In the end we find out that whatever type of magic the imprisoned woman has is the same as FMC but for some reason this magic is banned and she would be viewed as inherently evil if anyone found out. At the end the imprisoned woman is brought out for execution and main character tries to save her and then somehow shows that she has the “evil” power. The MMC who she fell for tries to kill her and she looks at him with betrayal. But then he is confused because he feels betrayed due to her magic. It ends with her leaving with the lavender haired diplomat to the other kingdom.
