Title. If I want to pursue a master's or direct PhD, what extra things should I do during my undergraduate studies?

Someone suggested I look for research opportunities during the summer, and also told me not to worry about not being able to graduate from a PhD program, because being admitted means a master's degree is a guarantee. Is that ture?
