Hi All,

I graduated high school recently and I was originally planning to do an engineering degree but now after having some time to think (and getting out of the grade-focused environment of year 11 and 12), I have decided I want to study a dual degree of music and science (majoring in physics and maths) as these have always been my passions. I’ve gotten the “broke artist”speech from loads of people which is very discouraging, however as I said these things have always brought me joy and fulfilment.

Using these bachelors degrees (+ master of teaching), I am wondering what it is like to be a teacher in these areas. I have worked for a couple of years as a private tutor in maths and music and I have found that I really enjoy teaching others, so teaching as a career prospect for me has been sitting in the back of my mind. This being said, I am aware that just teaching one person at a time is vastly different to teaching a whole class.

For context, I went through high school in the QCE system, so that is the only system of secondary school that I know anything about 😅

I have a few questions for high school teachers:

  1. What the best and worst parts of being a teacher (from your personal experience)?
  2. How much time outside of school hours is taken up by extra work, and what does that work entail?
  3. If I were to teach, would it be possible to teach both music and maths (for example)?
  4. Is it possible to maintain a hobby or budding career on the side?
  5. If you are teaching secondary, do you get a choice whether you teach QCE senior subjects or junior high school subjects?
  6. What is the job market like for maths/science teachers and/or music teachers?

thank you in advance :)
