New CPA - No Tax Prep Experience

Hi all,

I’m a new CPA with no accounting or tax preparation experience. I worked at EY for nine years in consulting (internal audit) and hold a CIA. In addition to my US CPA, I’m also a CPA in my home country.

I currently work full time as a risk and control auditor in industry, having left EY.

I pursued the CPA to earn more and start a side hustle in tax prep and other accounting services. I’m looking for a local or remote CPA firm to offer my services, but since I lack experience, I’ll likely need some guidance. My plan is to email local firms. Is this feasible? Should I offer my help for free first to gain experience? Do any firms provide guidance for part-timers with no experience?

I can only work after my office hours — would that work for a CPA firm?

Does anyone have a similar experience? I want to learn and earn, but I’m not sure if firms expect you to know everything from the start.
