best insurance for emergencies only? in california

hi! can ppl please share their experience, both good and bad, that they’ve had with providers?? i’m currently on the hunt for a plan that really only covers emergency costs.

i’ve had a wellness plan through banfield pet hospital since i got my boy in 2024 and have had nothing but positive things to say. they cover all his dental needs, routine check ups, and treatment costs for FIV that he was recently diagnosed with. so i’m not worried about coverage for that especially since i know it is a pre-existing condition. but they don’t do emergencies/arent opened 24/7.

i’ve read so many posts on here and tried doing a bunch of research but everything is so mixed. trupanion is out and no nationwide from what i’ve read. my cousin has lemonade for her animals and had really good experiences with severe health issues with her dog & the end of life coverage as well. but i’ve also read bad things about them? i got lemonade when i first adopted him but wasn’t able to afford it anymore.

i’ve seen people have good experiences with pumpkin? i’m in a much better position financially and am comfortable paying a higher premium if it’s worth it! any advice or experiences is really helpful.

not actually, because i know she isn’t. but i’m posting because i’m really curious if anyone has ever experienced this. and had found any solution?

a few years ago we took in a kitten who had been found in a litter on the street. this was a little bit before covid hit and i had just started college online so i was always home along w another family member. the kitty, although not “mine” formed a really strong bond with us and we were always attached at the hip. fast forward a little bit, covid hit, and i went through something really traumatic & then later moved out to seek more permanent mental health help and moved out on my own.

in the time i was gone she started developing really gnarly behavioral problems, but it was kind of manageable. i came home for the first time to visit for a night and she literally ran to me and was jumping on my legs like a dog does when excited. then i left again & she got a lot worse. extremely depressed and to the point where she had to have a bunch of tests done and eventually went on medication. its been a few years and she’s gotten better but is still nowhere like the kitty she once was. she’s just not the same cat.

could that truly all have stemmed from me leaving? it’s devastating to me when i think about it. i’ve cried abt it so many times. is there any way to avoid something like this? could we have done anything to prevent it from being so bad? she’s very well loved and taken care of. my family goes to the ends of the earth for their animals, they are family. so i know it’s nothing aside from me just moving out that changed or could have impacted her :(
