was anyone else given enemas as a kid
i‘m going to say trigger warning for graphic descriptions. from age 3-9 I had constipation issues. My first enema was at 3 years old, child-size. held down by my parents, crying, towel on the bed, the whole shebang. that first one was on doctor’s orders.
later on starting at age 6 or 7 my parents would stop buying the kid’s enemas with the bird on them, but instead the fleet ones in the green package. i googled them today and the ones that came in the box i recognize appear to have been made for ages 12 and up so i’m kinda like what the hell. whenever i had stomach pain or couldn’t dump for 2-3 days i had to get one (not on doctor’s orders from what i remember, apart from the first one i got at 3. my parents viewed it as a “quick fix” and the doctor was a last resort. they were all done at-home).
they were painful especially when it was going in, i remember one year when i was age 8 or 9 i had over 15 of them given to me that year alone. sometimes multiple times a week, we’d go through boxes. in hindsight i don’t think all of it was necessary, especially because you get pinned down and because of the painful nature of it. i would tell them that i didn’t think i’d need it or to give it another day before resorting to it and i’d get one anyway because it had “been too long” without me dumping even if it had only been 2 or 3 days.
my parents aren’t creepy at all, it was just used as a quick fix to an extent that i don’t necessarily agree with now as an adult. sometimes when i’d stay home from school because of stomach pain i’d have to get one even if i thought i didn’t need it. especially once i hit age 8 or 9 and there were no answers as to what was going on with my stomach issues. IIRC it would be “either you’re fine and you’re going to school or you’re staying home, not fine and you‘re getting an enema.”.
idk i’m ngl i’m probably not going to respond to the comments i get on here because i don’t want to think about it, but i also want to know if people had the same experience lol its kinda weird. idk it just hit me all at once yesterday two hours before a final exam i had, and i haven’t been able to get it off my mind since. the painful feeling of it especially. i think i bled a bit once or twice.
once it was all done for the ones in the green box (apparently made for 12+) my hands and legs would shake uncontrollably, i’d feel weak and see stars, and i’d have to eat and lay down in bed for an hour or two before i’d feel fine again.
in my parents’ defense, i was on various meds from age 7-9 for stomach issues, like miralax, dulcolax, ex-lax, pepto bismol, etc. and i would drink prune juice and eat prunes. i would take miralax, ex-lax and dulcolax every day at one point in my life (not together, i mean at different points from that time-frame), so its not like there was nothing else being done. i think that it was still overused as a preventative measure when it didn’t always need to be. especially now as an adult where i can freely listen to my bodily signals and decide what i’d like to do on my own.
there was one time when i was 8 and i was at another family member’s house, where I thought I’d need to get an enema after 2 days of not going. but instead we played Just Dance and it just came right out lol. Prior to that point I didn’t realize that exercise could help to that extent. also in their defense sometimes i’d be in and out of the hospital for stomach pain, but i’d get an xray and it’d just end up being gas or something not that serious. the enemas themselves they’d just buy from cvs without consulting a doctor first. i kinda feel like i’m overreacting but idk let me know lol
