I’m incredibly lucky to be able to weigh the pros and cons of my current job change. 27F and I’ve basically only known fully remote work for my career experiences so far.
I’ve been in my current role for 3.5 years, fully remote, awesome team and manager, BUT no upward trajectory of a role promotion anytime soon (which honestly has been fine with me if I get my 4% monetary raises, but I also haven’t gotten one in 2 years) and I haven’t learned anything new recently. Know the day-to-day tasks like the back of my hand. I get to walk my dog in the middle of the day if I want to. Super flexible!!
New job position was presented to me this week with a more intriguing role and tasks, but I likely would have to go in office 4-5 times a week, commuting at least 1 hour each way. I would be learning/managed by a mentor of my personal mentor, and who knows if I will be here for a long time (retention at this company is high).
So here’s where I’m struggling – what’s the price that you would put on commuting 2 hours every day? Keeping gas prices rising and car maintenance costs in mind as well. I know I’ve been spoiled with my remote jobs thus far, so I’m struggling to outweigh the pros of a fully remote job even without a significant pay raise. How would you even begin negotiating this in your interviews? Thanks in advance!
