Civil Engineer struggling to find a job in Finland – considering career change, need advice

Hi everyone,

I’m a 28-year-old foreigner who moved to Finland last year after my wife got a good job opportunity here.

I’m a civil engineer, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a job yet, either in my field or in other areas. From what I’ve seen, most civil engineering jobs require a near-native level of Finnish, and English-speaking positions are quite rare.

I speak English and French fluently, and I’ve recently reached B1 level in Finnish & I’m continuing to study and improve it.

I’d really appreciate any advice on how to improve my chances of finding a job.

Lately, I’ve also been thinking about changing fields. For example, I’m considering studying to become a lähihoitaja, since I’ve heard it’s in high demand and that it’s easier to find a job after finishing the training. Is that still true nowadays?

I’ve also thought about going into IT, but honestly, AI is ruining a lot of jobs, and it feels a bit risky right now, especially for juniors.

Do you have any recommendations for in-demand fields or training programs in Finland? Or any advice based on your experience?

Thanks a lot in advance!
