I’m redoing my basement and ran into something I haven’t dealt with before. This one part of the foundation wall has a black tar/asphalt coating on it that looks like old waterproofing. My plan is to seal the walls with Drylok and then paint, but I know Drylok won’t stick to tar. What’s the best way to handle this? Do I need to completely remove the tar or just the loose stuff, and what’s the best method if removal is needed? Or is there a primer or skim coat I can use over it instead of trying to remove everything? The walls are cinder block, and I don’t have any major active leaks, just trying to prep it the right way before finishing the space. Appreciate any advice.
