NOT looking for advice on whether or not my child should appear. What we're a bit confused about does he NEED to appear in order to get a support order? I've struggled to find the answer on the Oregon child support site and haven't been able to get ahold of them yet. My impression is that a support order will be included in the final settlement whether or not he waives his right to appear, but I can't find that stated anywhere.

I'm in the middle of getting divorced, and have one adult child (freshly 18) who received a notice to appear from my lawyer, with the option to waive his right to appear. When we first talked about it he didn't want to be involved at all and was planning on waiving that right, but now he's thinking about pursuing child support.
The question is if he waives his right to appear, I get the impression that this does not waive his right to that child support, and a support order will likely still be part of the final divorce settlement. Is that correct? Or does he need to participate in the proceedings in order to get the child support order? He'll qualify as he'll be in school full time in the fall, so that's not in question right now either.
