Are LLMs going to upend the career path for mathematicians?

A British mathematician , Timotht Gowers recently opined in his blog that in mathematics specifically LLMs are progressing so fast they are getting to a level where they will be able to solve a high proportion of the typical PhD training level problems, and therefore effectively cut off the path for people to reach proficiency as academic mathematicians.

While that seems like it might be hyperbole- people will likely find different problems elsewhere- it is interesting that LLMs give the appearance of being eff in mathematic, which of course fives singulatarians and similar something they can point to say “look, these things are very very smart” and it’s not easily debunked if you’re not an academic mathematician.

I don’t think there’s much here that’s new to regulars here but I think this is another data point in the change in the way AI is being reported. There is a change in sentiment and the moves to charge users closer to what it costs are getting attention.

Also “... customers spent the first phase of the AI boom treating intelligence as abundant and cheap. Now they are about to find out what their AI strategies are worth when the meter starts running,” is a quote I kind of like.
