okay, look, i know the entire show is based around some incredibly dark and wild themes. teens doing drugs, lying about their age in sexual scenarios, some even abusing each other.
but the past three episodes all feel like some form of weird propaganda more than a look into the dark side of life, and i dont like it.
cassie and nate have fallen into a weird tradmarriage category, which is weird when you look back at nate being an abusive buttwipe and cassie being an incredibly emotional people pleaser. now, she literally sat on the floor and cried about her makeup as nate was being hauled around like a ragdoll, and nate didnt even react at ALL when she popped a freaking cork into his face?
this doesn't even mention the fact sex work seems to play such a relevant role in this season. jules is currently a walking billboard for being an escort/hostess, cassie was disrespecting nate - who shockingly, barely reacted - to pursue onlyfans while dressed as a baby, maddy literally turned a regular influencer into a sex worker/an onlyfans model, and i don't like it if im honest. it feels like advertisement to the people who watch it more than genuinely representing it as part of some peoples lives.
the use of the n-word twice in episode two by people who aren't black and one being an obvious confederate... yeah, nah. i get that it's supposed to be realistic but there was no ACTUAL need for it to be used. and to pair this with a literal racist neonazi, which is weird by itself considering rue is mixed but they all seem to love rue and want her back?
and perhaps im wrong entirely, but the neverending sex scene with that character and faye was also incredibly odd. i dont recall ever seeing faye have intimate relations on screen before, but the only time we have is with that guy and she seems to be LOVING it. maybe im not picking up on something but it rubs me the wrong way.
not to mention that the word pig was treated as WORSE than a racial slur with horrific historical meaning.. it feels like a subtle lean to perpetuate the idea of 'good' and 'bad' kinds of different under right wing ideologies.
more miniscule things that have bothered me are things like the borderline slandering of bb in the latest episode. what's that about? as far as the audience is concerned, nobody ever had an issue with her, so they're just being mean.
lexi seems to be getting portrayed as the 'too woke' friend, and it also seems like characters don't react well to it, even if she isn't actually doing or saying anything wrong, just talking about what she wants for herself.
and circling back to rue, she somehow noticed that she had to leave immediately when she first bumped into laurie and was put in that room, but can't recognise that the rehab she took angel to clearly wasnt a rehab? after all the times she has BEEN to rehab??
i dont know. i feel like there's lots of oddities and very weird vibes this season and im not keen. i hope it all adds up for a greater point or something because right now, it genuinely just seems like they're pushing as many ideas onto people as they can because they know they'll watch it out of spite if nothing more. i may just be silly but this has been itching me for days.
what do you guys think?
